Lewis Center Root Canals
What Is A Root Canal?
Root canal therapy, often just called a “root canal,” is the most common type of endodontic surgery. It’s used to remove infected material from the inside of your tooth. When the enamel of your tooth is damaged due to tooth decay or an oral injury, bacteria can get inside and infect the soft, nerve-filled “pulp” that supports the tooth. Over time, this can cause a lot of pain and discomfort, and will eventually result in tooth loss if it goes untreated.
By removing infected material, cleaning the tooth, and filling the empty space, a root canal restores the structure of your natural tooth and eliminates the pain and discomfort of infection.
What Can I Expect From The Procedure?
Root canals are fairly common and routine, and they are quite similar to having a filling placed. Dr. Gavin will clean and numb your mouth, then use a dental drill to remove damaged enamel and create a small hole in the tooth. The infected tooth material is completely removed.
After this, the tooth will be disinfected and filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha, to support the remaining tooth structure. Then, a filling or temporary crown will be placed on the tooth, completing the procedure and restoring your smile.
