What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin, tooth-shaped dental prostheses. They are designed to fit perfectly over your existing teeth, covering damage and giving you a whole new smile. They are bonded into place permanently with advanced dental adhesives.

Usually, veneers are used to correct minor cosmetic issues, like slight crookedness and spacing. They can also be used to cover up minor damage, such as small chips in teeth. They are also popular among patients who have severely stained teeth that can’t be treated with teeth whitening alone.

How Are Porcelain Veneers Placed?

One of the reasons that veneers are so popular is because the treatment typically takes only two appointments, and is a non-invasive procedure — it does not require oral surgery. After Dr. Gavin has recommended veneers to treat your cosmetic issues, she will schedule your first appointment.

At your first appointment, your teeth will be cleaned and numbed. Then, a tiny layer of enamel is removed from each tooth that will be treated. This enamel layer is equal in thickness to the veneer, so it’s removed to ensure a perfect and seamless fit.

After this, molds and images of your mouth are taken, and sent to an outside lab where your veneers are created. You’ll be sent home with temporary veneers, and come back for your second appointment once the veneers are ready, usually in 2-3 weeks.

At this appointment, your veneers will be checked to ensure the fit and finish is perfect. Then, they will be bonded onto your teeth permanently, buffed, and polished to ensure that the final result is absolutely perfect.
