When Should My Child See The Dentist?

New parents often wonder when they should take their child to the dentist for the first time, and how often they should schedule dental appointments. The ADA recommends that you take your child to the dentist when their first tooth erupts, which can happen as early as six months, or when they turn 1 year old. From then on, you should schedule routine checkups and cleanings for your child every six months.

What To Expect From Your First Appointment

Your appointment may differ somewhat based on the age of your child. If your little one is 1-2 years old and does not yet have all of their teeth, Dr. Gavin will conduct a basic oral exam and answer any questions you may have about your child’s dental health. She’ll also give you honest advice and tips about how to protect your child’s oral health and development.

Older kids who already have most of their primary teeth will have their teeth cleaned and polished by one of our oral hygienists, and then have their mouths examined by Dr. Gavin. X-rays may also be recommended if Dr. Gavin suspects tooth decay or any other issue with your child’s oral development.
