What Is A Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are also sometimes called “caps,” because they are designed to cap, cover, and protect your entire tooth. Crowns can restore a cracked, chipped, damaged, or misshapen tooth to the proper size, shape, and color, and protect the underlying structure.

Treatment with dental crowns is primarily recommended for patients who have a tooth that has been compromised by decay or infection, or if a tooth has been damaged and treated with a root canal. However, porcelain dental crowns can also be used for cosmetic purposes to cover up teeth that are stained, misshapen, or chipped.

What Is A Dental Bridge?

Dental bridges replace a missing tooth by using two dental crowns. These crowns are attached to two healthy “abutment” teeth on both sides of the missing tooth. Then, a third crown is used to “bridge” the gap between the two abutment teeth, replacing your missing tooth. Bridges are cost-effective and comfortable, and they do not move or shift in your mouth, unlike partial dentures. They also do not need to be removed. In most cases, bridges are more affordable than dental implants, which makes them a good option for patients looking to restore their smile on a budget.

How Are Crowns And Bridges Placed?

Typically, it will take two appointments to have your dental crown or bridge placed. At your first appointment, Dr. Gavin will begin by cleaning and numbing your mouth. Then, the tooth (or teeth, for a bridge) will be trimmed to remove any damaged enamel and to provide a stable, solid surface upon which the crown or bridge can be attached.

After your tooth has been trimmed and prepared, Dr. Gavin will take images and impressions of your mouth, and work with a dental lab to build your crown or bridge. You’ll be sent home with a temporary prosthesis to protect your teeth until your next appointment.

At your last appointment, your dental crown or bridge will be placed and checked for proper fit, and minor adjustments will be made, if necessary. Then, Dr. Gavin will bond the bridge or crown in place permanently, using dental cement. Finally, it will be cleaned and polished to complete the procedure.
